It seems like some years I see obvious visual and yield differences by using N-N and/or AVAIL, and some years I do not see as much. I understand rainfall, soil type, pH, fertility, crop, disease, insects, and on and on all come into play, but this is often in the same field from one year to the next with somewhat similar environmental conditions. Why do I see this variability? by Southern Virginia

Larry Murphy, Ph.D.

One thing to remember is varieties/hybrids have tremendous effects on responses to applied nutrients.  For example, corn hybrids differ widely in response to starter fertilizer, especially starter P.  Consequently, responses to AVAIL and increased P availability may be affected by varietal differences.  Responses to N availability (and NutriSphere-N) are similarly affected.   Too, conditions are never exactly the same from year to year.  The same variability in magnitude of response occurs in research plots as well.
