When I get a soil test back and it says, for instance, we need to apply 40 Lbs. of P2O5, is that taking into consideration only 25% or so of the phosphorus applied first year is available to the plant? If so, then can we apply less and be as effective by treating the phosphorus with AVAIL?

W. Barney Gordon, Ph.D., M.S.
There are a very few soil test labs that have begun to take AVAIL treated P into consideration when making recommendations. The vast majority of labs do not. The soil test values you get back are, of course, based on a chemical extraction procedure that is tailored for soils in a particular area and a particular pH. The actual recommendations you receive are based on field calibration… Read Full Answer

If I broadcast urea + NutriSphere-N this spring and disc it in, will there still be N left when the corn is filling in late July, early August?

Dale Leikam, Ph.D.
Many factors affect the amount of plant available N remaining in the soil during grain-fill stages of corn development. The amount of soil/fertilizer N provided relative to yield potential, N fertilizer timing and method of application, soil texture and growing season environmental conditions are just a few of the factors affecting N nutrition of the crop through the growing season.… Read Full Answer

Will NutriSphere-N-treated urea be taken up as fast as just plain urea in corn when it is planted in cold early dirt? I was thinking about some with and some without preplant. It will be incorporated.

Dale Leikam, Ph.D.
Nitrogen uptake by the crop will not be slowed or delayed with incorporated applications of Nutrisphere-N treated urea. Nutrisphere-N is intended to slow certain soil N reactions in order to help reduce the potential for N loss - and not to delay the release of fertilizer N to crops.
