If I want to use MTM in my manure this fall, can I dump it into my pit 2-3 days before its applied and still have a benefit or do I need to wait 2 weeks after adding MTM to my pit? Can I dump MTM directly into each tank load at application time, if I want to try the product on my farm this fall?

MTM will protect the nitrogen and phosphorus from the time of application, whether it be applied in the pit/lagoon or directly in manure tanks before going to the field. If you’re applying MTM to a pit/lagoon within 14 days of when you want to pump out the pit/lagoon, agitation is required to ensure MTM is thoroughly dispersed. If you are unable to agitate your pit/lagoon, then you… Read Full Answer

For application of nitrogen on cool season grasses in the fescue belt, how early is too early to apply nitrogen for spring? December, January, February?

Dale Leikam, Ph.D.
For cool season grass spring hay production, nitrogen (N) applications should be made early enough to make sure the applied N is in the root zone prior to spring green-up. Late winter/very early spring is a preferred time as long as the soil is not frozen or completely saturated at the time of application. Depending on the specific geographic region in question, this date may range from… Read Full Answer

My corn yields were really bad this year so I don’t think very much phosphorus was removed from the field in the grain I did get. Should I have plenty left over and not apply phosphorus at all this year?

Larry Murphy, Ph.D.
With corn prices as high as they currently are and likely will be next year, I recommend not taking a chance on anything that could be yield limiting in 2013. If you use your soil test P as a guide, you may notice little or no change in the test from earlier samples. If the soil P test comes back high, I would recommend using a starter fertilizer. If you band fluid starter in a 2x2… Read Full Answer
